                                 EDUCATION IN SCOTLAND

     Scotland was, after Sparta, first in designing a system of public education general. Schooling was made compulsory for the first time with the 1496 Education Act, in 1561; the Church of Scotland designed a program for reform spiritual, which included the creation of a school in every parish. Education remained a matter over which the state church until 1872 Education Act.

     The Scottish education system is independent from the rest of the UK. The schools  are administered by the Scottish Education Department and local education authorities. The Scottish Parliament is responsible for approving the legislation related to education, Primary and secondary educations are compulsory for children up 16 years of age.

    There are a limited number of private schools, but fewer than 5 percent of children attending Scottish schools. Public school in Scotland’s are parochial, whether Protestant or Catholic.

    Children whit conditions such as blindness, deafness, mental retardation or other disabilities may receive special attention in mainstream school or to attend a specialized school for these children.

     There are 14 Universities in Scotland, some of which are among the oldest in the world. The country produces 1% of the world’s scientific publications with just 0.1% of the population, and higher education institutions are responsible for 9% of service sector exports of Scotland.
